News Celebrating success: 4000 shoulder endoprostheses implanted
Schulthess Klinik is celebrating an important milestone after implanting its 4000th shoulder endoprosthesis. This is a huge achievement for the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery department, which reflects the high quality standards when it comes to patient care.
Schulthess Klinik has reached another important milestone in shoulder surgery, having implanted its 4000th shoulder endoprosthesis. “This is a huge achievement for our entire team and an important indication of our long-term commitment to this area,” says Prof. Dr. med. Markus Scheibel, Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
Over the past five years, the department has conducted groundbreaking clinical studies that have been instrumental in identifying the best-possible prosthesis designs and treatments. “With modern technology such as 3D design and mixed reality on our side, we’re in a strong position to provide our patients with even more accurate and targeted treatment solutions,” explains Tim Schneller, Data Manager for Teaching, Research and Development.
Less pain, more smiles
Since the launch of the endoprosthesis registry in 2006, the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery department has been collecting huge volumes of data that can be used to carefully track long-term clinical outcomes for patients. And the results of this research speak for themselves. The average pain rating has dropped from 5.9/10 prior to surgery to 1.6/10 after recovery. Patient satisfaction is high at 8.4/10 and 90% of patients would decide to have the treatment again. An incredible 93% of patients report that their quality of life and shoulder function has been significantly improved. “It’s so important to us that our patients are still receiving the best-possible care years and years after their initial procedure,” says Prof. Scheibel. It will soon be time to present the results at the 20-year mark.
High level of care
The average stay in hospital for endoprostheses is only six days. The Shoulder and Elbow Surgery department also has its patients to thank for its exceptionally high level of care and its commitment to the continual improvement of its processes. “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has filled in our surveys and attended our focus groups,” says Prof. Scheibel. Without your support, we would not be able to keep improving on the treatment quality within shoulder and elbow surgery and in turn set new standards in shoulder surgery at Schulthess Klinik.
