News 500th knee operation using ROSA robot technology
The knee surgery field has a reason to celebrate – Schulthess Klinik has successfully performed the 500th knee operation using ROSA robot technology. ROSA has facilitated the personalised implantation of knee prostheses and supported surgeons during precise and successful procedures since 2021.
Schulthess Klinik is celebrating a special achievement – in summer 2024, the 500th knee operation was performed using the innovative ROSA robot technology. This technology facilitates the precise implantation of knee prostheses in a manner adapted to the patient’s individual anatomy. ROSA stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant, was developed by US company Zimmer Biomet and has been in use in the clinic since 2021.
The ROSA knee surgery team is headed up by Dr. med. Gregor Baumann and Prof. Dr. med. Michael Worlicek, supported by Dr. med. Valentino Bruhin. They now use ROSA as a matter of course for many knee prostheses. While the surgeons performed the first few operations with caution so that they could fully familiarise themselves with the system, ROSA has become a firm fixture of their procedures in the last two years.
Precise implantation – down to the millimetre
Using ROSA technology makes it possible to adapt the implantation of prostheses to the patient’s individual mechanics and anatomy – right down to the millimetre. This not only produces exceptional outcomes – scientific analyses have also shown that it speeds up the rehabilitation process in many cases. A further benefit of ROSA is that thanks to the optimised processes during surgery – which are improved continuously under the leadership of Ivan Krizinac, Belinda Philipp and their deputy Maria Veichtlbauer – it is now almost impossible to notice the difference from conventional knee prosthesis operations.
ROSA supports the surgeons at every stage – using X-ray imaging and optical trackers, the robot measures the patient’s knee, captures even the tiniest movement and provides precise data that ensures the best possible implant positioning during surgery. At the end of the operation, the position of the prosthesis is checked again to make sure that the result is perfectly adapted to the patient.
By using ROSA, Schulthess Klinik remains at the cutting edge of technical developments in knee surgery and continues to support innovation for the good of its patients.
